Who is the best employee to hire?

For the new tech team, the hiring manager should emphasize a technical education as well as education from other areas. It’s not ideal for video editors to pay, but hiring someone with a computer science degree is more common than hiring someone with a programming degree, because those disciplines can provide the same level of knowledge, and that’s one of the best ways video editors learn.

For the more technical or “knowledge intensive”, you might want to consider teaching yourself. Even though it’s unlikely that the video editor will do anything beyond the basics of the program, teaching yourself from scratch, even if you don’t use it, could give you the foundation for creating better video.

I’m not suggesting that you should just hire people you know. You may be able to find employees who’re in other fields who don’t have technical backgrounds, but if you can’t find a technical person, then I don’t recommend it. That being said, hiring someone who doesn’t know enough to do a job doesn’t mean that you can’t hire an engineer with a technical background. You can find good candidates that way.

Do you have access to professional resources?

For example, the video editor who works in the video editing room, has access to:

a quality video recorder, so can record the video and edit the video file

a program that will allow an editor to view the frame by frame and process the video into what you want to do

the latest version of software, such as DCC or Adobe Premiere

What tools does a video editor typically have?

Depending on what you’re doing, the number of tools you have will vary. If your project covers a broad range, the ability to manipulate image data is a major advantage over an image editor who’s looking at the same image, making adjustments.

If it’s a more technical process, then it might be possible to have one video editor who’s looking at the same file using, say, Photoshop, one video editor who’s working with Adobe After Effects, etc.
