There are a few options. When I was in film school, I didn’t get to work on any projects that would have gotten me funded by a major studio. I also didn’t get to develop my own ideas while in grad school, so my options were limited to working as a part-time staff editor on commercials. Now I was trying to focus my efforts on my film at the beginning of next year, and I figured I had a few years to put all my work into it, so I figured I did not need to worry about starting a movie. Plus, I had no real competition for the work I was asked to do. Plus, I already had some experience and knew I was ready to produce my own films.
What is your favorite part of shooting movies? I love working with the crew. I think I have been lucky to work with many different types of people in my journey. A lot of times, my work is directed by different people than I know. The people I am most grateful for working with, especially on features like The Revenant and Pan’s Labyrinth, is the people who make my life so much easier every day.
Any final say on your career? Definitely! But I would take up my time shooting a movie if it meant more hours of doing what I love. Plus, my favorite thing about doing this, is that we don’t have to live with any limitations. We work at our own pace, and can’t be tied down by any rules that make our work “more hard or interesting” than “less hard or interesting”.
What I hope people take away from this interview is that I am not writing a book, or even doing anything resembling a book. I just wanted to share my experience, and hopefully give other filmmakers a little advice too. I think filmmaking is one of the most rewarding things one can do as a working adult, and I know a lot of people I know would love to work alongside me, and have some great stuff to share with you about the process.
