How do I market myself as a filmmaker?

The biggest thing I do is put out a ton of music. It’s my hobby. I do it in my dorm at the university and in my bedroom during class. I get all of that done in about 20-30 minutes and it’s pretty cool. I got a lot of people interested in me by having that music.

I love the idea of a film on some other movie. Because I’m from Seattle and I live up here, it’s a good film to put on. It’s a different movie to me than if I was from Chicago or Los Angeles. There can be so many differences. Sometimes I’ll even get more people involved if it’s Seattle.

When you got your first film, what were you feeling? Did you have an idea of what you wanted to do with your life or what you hoped to achieve as a filmmaker?

I had thought of starting a band and I’d had the ideas of doing a documentary with my friend. Then we didn’t get a film made because I was working at Walmart. I had so much work to do. So I didn’t really have a plan. I just kept pushing and doing more films. One day I got involved in a school project. I was talking to a teacher on the phone and asked her “How do I make this a good movie.” And she told me, “Try this.”

So I did. Then I took my car out for a ride and I went to the lake in Seattle. It was a cold, rainy, miserable day and I had some good water. I put out a small film with the camera that I got. I took another small film in the same year and one year later I got this big one… it became one of my most popular movies of all time. That was about 2004. Three years later, after I did another big one, “The Green Gables”, this happened. They sent over this movie to the Seattle Film Center. They were like “what would you do with this?” I had this great idea… I’d want to film people and I would want them to be interviewed.

So I got $4,500 and I started this crew… I was going to make about half the movie. So I told my team, “No, we’re doing all of it and we’re going to make it in one day.” I had a day-and-a-half and a half, just to go through all the things that I wanted to try and
