If you don’t know what that is then you don’t know anything about music or film.
You’ve used a lot of different terms in this whole course:
The director. That doesn’t sound so bad.
But it’s really terrible when you get there, because you don’t know exactly what you have and you want to make sure that you’re making everything the best that it can be. So you don’t really know which terms you’re using so much, the term “artist”, for example. You would try to say, “Yes, yes. That sounds right,” but your brain would be making an enormous amount of judgements, about who the artist is, as opposed to the fact that there is a specific thing that the director or writer did. You just get used to all these different things that people use. It’s a very odd mental process, very very hard to understand, and very, very hard to do.
This is something that I try and help people understand: it’s so easy to say “no” to something: You know, that’s not going to cut it for our video, but we’ll do it anyway because this is the most beautiful photo we can do, and this is the most important part. And then you’ve got to find out from where the line is. How do you take this, how do you make this different and exciting? And then you have to try and figure out if your approach does the thing that it’s supposed to be doing. And sometimes you’ll be right, and sometimes you won’t be right. And then there’s the other side that you’ve got to find out how to do the wrong thing because, because your brain is not on it all the time.
I’m also going to use some words you’ve probably never heard before that might be helpful, and so if I use them again and again the lesson’s going to grow deeper still.
You’ve used a lot of words. What are some of these words? This is also a big part of what I want you to understand. A really bad filmmaker is not going to spend his entire life writing movies. He’s never going to do that, he’s not going to spend his life writing films. When you work with a writer, you spend a lot of time thinking about that guy, thinking about how to work with him
