For centuries human beings have been telling us what the world should be like, for we have watched, read and listened, all from our beds or at work or at school. Now, in the age of the Internet, we are no longer listening, but viewing and sharing. But in a world where the internet is everywhere, all human life online becomes increasingly interesting.

A new book, in which we asked four authors how they saw society’s future, is The World We’re Living In: How The Internet Has Transformed Life. The authors, from five countries – America, the United Republic of Tanzania, Switzerland, Portugal and Brazil – have all recently published books: Daniel Everett’s The End of History and Culture; Tania Diamantopoulou’s The Future of Work; J. D. Vance’s The World Like We Know It; Simon Scaglione’s The New Science of Life; and Tessa Thompson’s The Future of Music and the Arts.

For each book the authors offer a snapshot of the day that year. For America’s book, there was The Great Depression; Switzerland’s was the fall of Communism. Portugal’s book deals with the rise of the Internet; Tanzania’s was its “electronic apartheid”.
