A federal judge on Thursday gave the University of Oklahoma a 72-hour period to comply with a ruling that will force the university to allow students to carry handguns on the campus.
The Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office filed a motion demanding UO stop enforcing a 2013 change that requires students to obtain a university-issued permit to carry. The state’s gun regulation law passed through the Legislature in June, but only two universities in the state are currently issuing such permits: Oklahoma State and Central Michigan University, both of which require a criminal background check before someone who is not legally armed can purchase a gun.
An earlier stay request from the state of Oklahoma on the application process was denied by Judge John G. Heyburn and upheld by the U.S. District Court. Still pending, the UO’s motion seeks a more favorable ruling from the judge on Wednesday.
Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin had warned that the order would have “chilling” effects on universities like the University of Oklahoma. The order, which was issued Thursday, also blocks UO from enforcing the new gun restrictions in July unless it receives final approval from the U.S. Supreme Court.
Oklahoma is one of 15 states and territories that have passed new gun laws following the Dec. 14 massacre in Newtown, Conn., which left 20 school children and six educators dead. UO Chief Medical and Dental Students Association President John Lark was among those on the UO campus who came out to help. A group of 10 other students will help with counseling and other services during the school’s “Safe Passage” night Aug. 14.
