Not necessarily. That’s because photographers have very different motivations. For a photographer, being on-location in an environment that can be subject to the elements, or just a place that you live, it all means something different. You know what it feels like, and you can tell if a situation means you need to be extra careful.
A lot of photographers tend to take a lighter approach with their image manipulation because it can make the image easier to edit, with fewer mistakes. It’s usually not an accurate representation of reality, but you can see through it like a light. It’s about understanding the situation around you and being able to interpret the elements.
What other camera settings make a shoot possible?
A lot depends on how you’re shooting. On-location, there really are no preset options; it’s all based on you and your environment. The most important thing is the lighting. The light can be as light as you want it to be; it’s important to find the balance. I try to have lots of light—just enough to get a good shot, and then light some of the background behind me.
As photographers, we are often called upon to help clients with their own light settings and sometimes, the lighting needs to match with the environment. It’s always good advice to try to learn and practice a few things beforehand.
Is it something you try to learn before you shoot to get the best possible look?
I never know how the lighting looks until I’m there. But you really don’t want to be in a spot where if I’m taking some good photo, it doesn’t work out. If something goes wrong there, it really throws a wrench in our whole idea, like, oh, I can’t see well enough; I need to get someone else off my shoulder, and this is what I have to do.
I always want to be able to walk away from that situation feeling that I can correct the situation, that I understand what went wrong. Then, I hope this doesn’t impact on how I’m coming in the next shoot; I know where things have gone wrong and I can correct it, and then we’re going back to work.
There are lots of things that you must take into consideration in order to have a successful shoot. You have to be a certain shape on the set and have the right look for what you’re hoping to capture, which is something you don’t know until it’s happening.
