Is downloading Photoshop for free illegal? – Learn Photo Editing Tutorials Painterly Style Examples

The jury is out! Downloading the free Adobe Photoshop comes at a steep price: an estimated $2.70 a month, which you have to spend in the browser’s fees, to use the app, a lot of time if you’re using it in a program as well as at home. Many users have expressed a desire to download a desktop-class version of the Photoshop—a lot of the software is open format, or not locked-down—and then go for a professional version on a desktop instead of a portable device. If you want a professional-quality version, you should just buy Photoshop outright and install it. Here at Ars, though, we’re skeptical about the practicality of this “downloading an all-or-nothing” option. I’ve always thought we should try to have a bit more control over what we’re downloading, and so we’ve only ever opted to download Creative Cloud for $119 a month for two years. (Adobe declined to make a formal recommendation for any particular version.) The other option is to use a Mac—and you certainly can. (I’ve used both Mac OS X and Windows machines with multiple apps installed to perform our Photoshop testing.) But there are plenty of apps—such as Photoshop’s—you can download and install for free, and we think most of us would prefer at least an option to use Photoshop when we don’t have a Mac at home.

What does it pay to use Photoshop for free? It depends how much you want to spend. (See also: All in the name of free . . .) If you’re someone who has to use it for personal work or as a hobby, then maybe you’d be better off spending $5 or so a month, but a lot of us, including yours truly, would rather just buy a desktop-class version of the software. (Mac users will be happy to hear that the price of Windows software with a commercial-level price tag is $39 a month.)
