I thought that I would include the following video below for completeness.
How To: Install Linux
This isn’t the official instructions, I’m still not sure what I am doing wrong. This is a test, and you know that this is not a guarantee of anything.
First off, we need to make our way to a USB stick with Linux on it. This will be our boot CD. Make sure you are using a USB stick, if you’re using a removable disk, it will probably not work. For this test, I’m going to use a USB that’s 2x2TB. I’m not sure if this will help.
sudo apt-get -y install linux-image-generic linux-headers-generic linux-headers-generic-lts-update update-alternatives
This will install the packages you need.
Downloading a Linux Kernel
The easiest way to figure out which kernel version you’re running is to run one of three commands.
First, take your Linux kernel’s version number. Usually, you can just go to your package manager and find it. But using Linux, if you want to install different versions at different times you’ll want to look them up yourself. Once you found your Linux version, you’re going to want to make sure you haven’t already installed it.
The easiest way to do this is using a command like:
sudo gedit /etc/make.conf
You can find your kernel version, however, using this method would probably not be the most convenient. If you’re on Windows for example, you can usually just find the kernel version from a registry key. You can also find your kernel’s version using the command:
sudo lsmod | grep -i linux-generic
Now that we know the kernel’s version number we are going to get to the “–make” option where it will tell you the number of the kernel we’re going to install. To tell it what version you want, type:
sudo make -jN
There’s a –jN flag to tell make it doesn’t actually make any changes and only updates the files after you do it.
To make sure the installation completes, type:
We’re almost there! Now, to test if it worked correctly, type:
sudo systemctl status sudo umount /dev/sde sudo umount
