How do you talk with a puppet? – How Do Ventriloquists Throw Their Voice

“How do you talk with a puppet?” is an important question in a puppet show. We want to establish our character. Our character is a puppet. We want to establish our backstory. We want to build our character. So I look at a lot of shows and a lot of actors in the same way. In that regard, I don’t actually read a lot of scripts, I just go and listen to their ideas and try to understand their world. So yeah, you’ve got to get comfortable being on your own, and then eventually you know just how much you’ve accomplished. Even the people who want to read the scripts don’t have to read them until they are already in rehearsals, and that’s when you know just how much you’ve accomplished. I’ve done this a lot in my career. I like to take on a lot of different projects, but really what gets me is that as I do this, I do get very comfortable in my own world.

Then a couple of years ago, I heard about a guy named David Yant of David Yant Productions, and I found out that the puppets he has are made out of cardboard and that they’re made entirely out of paper. My first reaction was like, “Oh God!” Then as I read the scripts it just kind of came to me. So yes, that’s the answer.

What did you use for the paper?

I think cardboard is a good material for things like this. It’s a really light and easy to work with material, and it allows us to use our bodies much more freely, and also to make the lines bigger. Once you start putting stuff on a puppet, it takes on a personality. And that
