There are two things I do. First, I do a very quick one hand curl up a barbell. With the barbell I do it really fast. Usually I can hit a 60kg weight at 5-6 seconds. Then I do a one arm curl followed by a one arm back squat, and I throw that to the second floor. I can throw it up there in the air before it touches and that’s a hard exercise for me. I always feel like I have to try to get out of the way so I can be there for the throw later in the year.
With the discus?
I don’t use the discus at all. I just do a one arm squat to throw off balance, sometimes I pull it back to throw off balance, I don’t use it. It’s not good for my knees. It’s probably more for the head. The discus is for me a different sport. The discus is one of the things that I do to keep my mind and body moving. It’s something I can work a lot harder into, that I would never do in baseball at all, I think.
Would you say that you need to build back up after an injury?
Absolutely. When you get to the point that you have one knee that won’t do it any more, your body and mind will tell you that you will be ready to take on a whole new sport and that is an injury. If you are going to do so you have to accept that you will be going into it in a different way, and that you have not played baseball for a long time. It will take a while for you to get back up there though. But yes, with the knee injury, I had a lot of training to do to get back, and I believe I did everything that I could, I still missed a lot of practice, but I managed to get back on the field in September, as that season went on.
It’s interesting that you look at sports which seem to have the most longevity: baseball and the NHL. Is that something which you could apply to discus?
I guess in terms of sports with more than 10 seasons that I have studied, I am quite surprised that the NHL doesn’t seem to have a longer history. I would have to say that the American football season seems to last for a lot longer than basketball and baseball. I don’t know what is going on when they want to have their games on Saturdays
