Yes, it’s true. In the late 1960s, after she had made her first film, the actress got a call from the then owner of Cinequest Inc., who thought that she would be a potential star.
He promised to make a movie that would be shot in Hawaii, with the actor playing her father and the studio giving her a cut of the sales, but not the money.
Rex was only 19 and she was 19 when she filmed the film. As the film progressed and she was seen by many of the big names in Hollywood, this plan fell apart and she was left in the lurch. She told the author that she had hoped to go the more “indie way”, to make a movie that was a “funny” movie without the big money; something to be seen in a club or a local theater.
“I’d made the films with a lot of money and I’d got a lot of good press, but I wasn’t in the movie business anymore,” Rex recalled. “And I went: ‘Well, this was it. I’ll take any money that they give me. I’ll only act in small films for money… I’ll play anybody that I want.’ and I went. And they gave me some money. And it was the first time I’d done that. I never had the chance to get away with anything like that. I made it on my own,” she remembered. “And that was it. I thought, ‘This is it.’ Now the people are coming up to me and they said ‘Oh my God, you’re so good. You’re so good. You’re so beautiful.’ I said, ‘I’m just doing my part. We’re doing our part too.'”
What did you think about the film?
“I think what I should have done was be a very nice, decent young woman, a mother. I should have just kept off the set and let them make their own decisions. But they couldn’t make their own decisions, unfortunately. So there was some nice, nice love that they could never repay in the way that I wanted them to make it,” Rex said.
Is there a part of you that still regrets doing this film?
“It’s sad. Of course it’s a part of me that does feel sad. Because I did try to help them, but I didn’t make a lot of money out of it. So I probably don’t regret doing the film
