There are a small number of photographers, including freelances, as well as large-scale commercial and studio jobs in the world. It’s all about the client.
Is there a market for a full-time photography career?
I doubt it. Most of the people I know, and a lot of people I meet, are just photographers that want to shoot and capture what they see, whether in the street, in a studio or in their own lives. There’s no way to make a living doing photography. It’s just about having fun and being a good photographer.
Do you have any advice for aspiring photographers who want to do a commercial photography career?
Look at what you already do. I’m not a professional. I don’t even have professional experience in the field of photography. But I have tons of experience as a teacher. Photography is my dream job, and if you like what you’re doing you can do it.
How long have you been doing photography?
I started when I was 17. I’ve always been fascinated by nature. I’ve got a lot of great images of birds that I’ve edited over the years. That has led to my fascination with wildlife and wildlife photography.
How long do you shoot each day?
It varies. I love to take pictures in the morning and late afternoon, because those are the hours when there’s natural light. Then, if my client requests something, I’ll be there immediately with camera in hand – sometimes for 15 minutes just to get it right. Some days I shoot in the morning and then I’ll have a meeting or a client for lunch. I’ll start shooting after lunch because I’m happy with the images, and then I’ll finish my work at night when I’ve had my rest.
What are the main skills you need to be a successful commercial photographer?
Good lighting and composition skills. Good light. Proper composition. Understanding light. When you are shooting in natural light, the photographer needs to understand the camera’s limitations. Knowing what I think your camera is capable of doing will give you an idea about what sort of shots you can achieve.
Do you use tripod?
I use a tripod a lot. I like to walk around with a tripod in order to see the whole photograph from different angles. I often carry a couple of the tripod mount lenses in my pockets to give me a couple of different perspectives of a location. I love taking pictures of people or people
