It scans the digital images you send to it – or, if you’re doing it yourself, uploads them – and automatically removes unwanted, old or otherwise undesirable pixels or lines. You’ll then be back at square one, just as you were before you got into the world of photo retouching. That’s the beauty of a cloud-based system – any changes you make to your photos will still be saved and visible to any camera or other photo-follower who happens to want to know their work is going unnoticed by others. The process is quick and efficient, with a range of photo editor apps and utilities available for easy use.
In addition to automatic retouching, Photo Retouching also offers ‘reversal enhancement’, the practice of changing a photo based on contrast – for example, changing a photo in which the background is brown to a photo in which the background is white or a photo in which the camera is turned off to one in which the shutter has been turned on. To achieve these effects, the software scans three areas at a time from each photo – the original foreground and background, the areas of the photo you have the greatest contrast and the areas of the photo that aren’t as much. It then applies these adjustments to make everything look as it should.
As an added bonus, Photo Retouching has its own ‘filter’ tools for choosing the best areas of color and textures for retouching, which should make it particularly suitable for photographers who do work that involves manipulating images.
Photo Retouching is free, available now for OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) and later.
