Most modern commercial saffron is made from a small number of small clusters, and not the thousands and thousands used historically. The original plants were small, less than a meter in size and the first samples were a fraction of a penny in size. The saffron today of course is a very high purity concentration.
Where does saffron come from?
Ancient Persian traders brought saffron from the East in large quantities to Persia. The first record of saffron comes from the year 1192, from the town of Aqaba at about the border between the land of the Persians and the land of the Jews. It was then imported to Europe.
In the 1700s the spice trade brought saffron with it to America and it was grown on both American and British plantations. It was originally cultivated in northern and eastern Egypt, but was later cultivated in the Mediterranean and in India.

Saffron plants grow on small trees, or a single plant may grow to be about 5 x 5 meters (approximately 15 x 15 feet).

The leaves of saffron are usually round and 2 to 2.25 cm (about one inch) long and are 1/2 inch wide.
Saffron is one of several common spice plants to which this genus is often referred. Spice species from the genus include bell pepper, coriander, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, oregano, rosemary, and thyme.
Saffron is often grown as a flowering perennial. This form of the plant grows up to a meter in height and flowers from early spring to the summer.
The seed coat of the plant resembles a green leaf. Seed that is blown across the ground is the seed coat. The seed coat can fall for any number of reasons. Common reasons include rain damage, and insect damage.
