In the past, there have been many studies linking green tea catechin (VG) to kidney health and it is suspected that some green tea constituents may have a beneficial effect on kidney function. Some studies have shown that intake of high intakes of green tea have been associated with reduced risk of developing kidney stones and high doses of VG have been shown to lower blood cholesterol, so this may help. However, it seems to be unclear whether high intakes of VG may also benefit a wide range of other health issues like cardiovascular disease.
One of the major limitations of the studies discussed in this review is that they rely primarily on self-report. So they are limited by this in determining causality, but also by the fact that the research is still ongoing, so it is possible there may be more research to be done on this topic. So the results that we have seen in the studies mentioned are not conclusive and not as reliable as a study that asks a person to keep a diary of how much they are eating over the course of an entire week.
However, we find the literature in this review is extremely promising and should help inform the future clinical trials to test this topic more in relation to our health and in particular, to determine whether our intake of green tea has clinical benefit.
There is some speculation that other green tea components may be able to aid kidney function, but it is not clear how widespread these effects are.
Other potential health benefits and side effects to consuming green tea include antioxidants that may reduce inflammation, which may also help reduce the risk of heart disease.
What are the different varieties of green tea?
We have covered green tea containing more catechins, which are caffeine free, so no caffeine is included. You might notice that some of the green tea catechins are known as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and epigallocatechin isomer (EGCG2) with EGCG being found in green tea’s leaves as well.
Some varieties of green tea also contain flavonoids, which are a group of substances found in plants including the sunflower seeds, pine nuts and cocoa beans. The flavonoids and polyphenols found in green tea have a variety of compounds that include antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Flavonoids are known as phytonutrients and flavonoid phytonutrients could potentially be of help to improve our cardiovascular risk, including in reducing the risk of heart disease.
