We have been contacted by many people offering to save us from the risk of importing expensive saffron by making a special batch of saffron soap (without the watery, sulphury flavour) from an alternative.
There are a number of other potential alternatives but I wanted to make a personal comparison between the cost of both the saffron and the soap.
First thing to bear in mind is that soap is a business and many of the companies will not carry the saffron (even if they claim to have), as they will not use it (and they are not paying the “tax” so the tax would also have to be waived).
Here are the costs of the saffron and soap which I am aware of so I can give you an idea of the difference.
Saffron – 4-6 shilling / €1
Saffron soap – 2 shilling / €2
Saffron – 4-6 shilling / €1Saffron soap – 2 shilling / €2 Saffron – 4-6 shilling / €1 Source: Colette de Suez Saffron – 4-6 shilling / €1
But if you’re prepared to try, you can get a 50 gram packet of saffron soap (from Colette de Suez – £1.99) for €1.50, or a box of saffron soap (with the watery, sulphury flavour) for about €3.50.
For me, I found both to be a tad too expensive, especially the soap – but then my experience with Saffron soap (from the Colette de Suez range) and the saffron soap is from the same batch and made at the same time as mine. It takes between two and three batches of saffron soap to get an average price.
One last note: the brand of soap in which you buy must contain saffron, otherwise it will not be allowed in the UK.
Soap from UK suppliers (including the Colette de Suez range) cannot contain saffron but Saffron Soaps can contain saffron.
So if you want to save money by looking for the cheapest soap, then you could purchase either of these saffron soaps, which you can then wash in hot water to remove all the water.
