When trying to lose weight, the first step is to keep your calorie intake constant and keep a log of how much you eat and where you eat it so you know how many calories you gain back and how much you eat to make up for that. The second step is to stop all of your normal activities (for example, walking your dog) completely and to only participate in the activities you need (for example, exercising). Finally, to lose 5kg in 2 weeks, you must do this through a combination of both of these factors. The first step is what is known as the “sprint diet”, which was first implemented in a paper written by the late Dr Peter Attia, a clinical professor of exercise science. It involves sticking to this program daily while on a diet that is very high in carbohydrates (i.e. eating a lot of them) and low in fat and protein, and a very low calorie diet (i.e. eating very little). The second step is the “low calorie diet”, which means sticking to this program. The third and final step, and something the authors have put so much effort into, is to maintain a specific weight to begin with, and then lower it until the target weight is reached. And they have done all this while maintaining as low a level of exercise as possible. Even while working out a couple of days a week without being able to maintain a healthy body weight. In the study in 2011, the average participants lost 5kg in just 90 days and this was accomplished through the combination of the sprint diet and the low calorie diet. While the combination approach used in the study can be described in a number of simple ways (e.g. “eat less, exercise more” or “eat less, stay healthy and exercise more”), there is a lot more to it than simple, easy-sounding words. I have to admit I don’t know exactly what these studies are doing here, but the results are intriguing and the studies aren’t the first ones to try this strategy of going on a very restrictive set of diets, in a very short period of time. In fact, there have been studies that have tried it in extremely short timeframes, with very low numbers of people, such as in a single group of only 20 children under the age of 10.
