This question was asked to us by our fans last year at the 2015 U.S. Census with “How often do your ancestors run?” We were not entirely surprised if the answer was less than one hour per week, but when we examined the stats we had an extra question to ask. Would it surprise people how much food is being wasted and wasted quickly because of all of the activity involved?
We looked at the USDA Agricultural Census Data and the USDA Food and Nutrition Service data and compared them to the Daily Active Average. We wanted our analysis to be as accurate as possible so we compared the two data sets for each category of food waste or waste product. Here are the results:
The Daily Active Average for food waste is 14.9 lbs/yr. (10,832 lbs of food are wasted annually.)
Food waste generated by physical activity accounted for 15.7% of the total food waste, but only 4.9% of all food lost.
Food waste by type accounted for 19.1% of the average food waste of 22.7 lbs.

The following food waste categories, shown on a scale of 1-10, show how much food is wasted each year and by the food type.
Alcohol, a by-product of the aging process, is actually a very good thing. It’s been used as a “health drink, for the liver, as one of the main sources of antioxidants and as a medicine for the digestive tract.” It also contains some wonderful antioxidants which are actually more important than the alcohol itself. When done the right way, “alcohol and other chemicals that contribute to the breakdown of carbohydrates and fats also act as beneficial agents, including the prevention of cancer.” Unfortunately, if consumed improperly, it can cause gastrointestinal distress or death.
2.) Paper and cardboard
A paper and cardboard product could also be used for all-purpose items. This category shows how much “materials that can be reused; recycles, degrades, and re-uses in various ways.” Although a lot of our plastic shopping bags are made from paper and cardboard, it’s possible to make the most of those resources.
