If you are not able to build your own house to start using the building resources listed above, there are plenty of woodworking skills available to help you build something. Start by learning how to make your own fire and wood stove. Then, if you have the patience to go a bit deeper, you will be able to make a woodworking cabinet.
Once you have everything you need, and you have the means, I am going to advise you to take a break from furniture building. Instead of spending all your time on furniture building projects, take a few free days (or a day or two) to enjoy nature, have a vacation or something similar, and then get back to woodworking as soon as you can. In my case, after about ten weeks of woodworking, I decided to take my time on this project.
In the meantime, I am also recommending my new book The Secret Life of Housepets, available exclusively on Amazon. It is filled with many great tips and tricks, about how to become comfortable living alone!
In the summer of 2012, I decided to go on another retreat with my family for six weeks, with the purpose of getting back into the swing of things. While the retreat was fantastic, the next two years were even better, so I am happy to report that now I am ready to get back into furniture building again. At home, I have a couple of new projects waiting, and I have found a solid source of woodworking materials to complete that still keeps me busy.
My favorite tips for getting started on woodworking from The Secret Life of Housepets include the following:
1) Don’t start on furniture first – you will waste your time and money – first, and most importantly, the time, energy and money you spend on furniture building will make your woodworking project much better.
2) Don’t start with a table – in all honesty, I never used a table as a model – it only takes you so far.
3) The first cabinet you try is the best – there is no such thing as a “perfect cabinet” – it is all about what works for you, and what will work for your project.
4) You don’t have to do everything using the exact same tools. – It is important to look at the tools you have available and use them for all your tasks.
5) Have fun
