The first thing a good woodworking project should have is a purpose. The woodworking project should have an end and it should be a practical use. And it should be something you will use for a couple years. Most of the “easy” home work takes place in the first 10 years, and in that time you probably won’t use this wood. You have to have the “purpose” of the project first, and then it’s easy.
Do you use my pictures of a project as an inspiration for your wood work?
Yes, almost always. But only if it’s a useful project for you. If you use them for something or other, that’s fine as long as it doesn’t make a big difference.
Do you think woodworking needs to change or is woodworking fine in its current form?
One of the reasons I started writing this blog is because, in my opinion, woodworking needs to change:
If you use a woodworking system like saws, hammers and router bits, then you need to change your methods of working.
If you use plywood instead of hardwoods like pine and cedar, you need to change your techniques.
If you use pine, then you need to change your techniques. It’s important to learn how to get good results from different projects.
I’m a self taught woodworker. Is that how it should be?
You should learn how to learn. At least if you’re trying to learn woodworking, it shouldn’t hurt to take some tutorials or instruction. (I’m not suggesting taking a class to learn how to get good results, but taking it out for a short walk with a teacher is a good idea)
The reason I say “you should learn how to learn” is because it’s easier to learn your own project when you’re not making anything. You don’t even have to know what you’re making…You just have to know what a saw is. (Even if you’re using a saw or hammers – they’re still a tool)
If you’re making something useful…Then you’re working on something specific. You don’t need to learn more about wood, how to use it or how it can be made. It’s not like you’re a lumberjock who just wants to learn about wood. If woodwork is going to be something useful, then you should learn it.
