If you don’t have a dedicated woodworking bench, the biggest mistake most people do is get out the bench and start trying out different things. It’s important to know what you should buy first and what you won’t be able to use without the bench.
This list is not exhaustive and there are a few items that you aren’t going to be able to use without the bench. There are a lot of people out there who are just happy to keep their bench and don’t consider what other people will be using their products on. So, that’s fine, that’s not what this list is about.
The goal is more of a tool list, with a good range of options. That way, you can pick the best woodworking tool for your first tool (or toolset) so you don’t have to pick a new tool (or toolset) for every project.
I’m not going to say which is which here, because that would spoil a good tool roundup!
If you’re a beginner, you’re probably going to be stuck with a basic woodworking saw, a standard router, or some other kind of hand saw. So, you can move on to something like a dado-type router (or an EZ-Saw, or an electric dado, or whatever you like to call it!).
If you’re a pro, you can go bigger, like a plane, chisels, chisel set, etc. If even small tool brands are too much for you and you’re not going to make the $70 to buy one, you can get a more expensive tool.
For instance, if you’re spending under $500 on a tool, you might consider the “real” plane (or chisel, or plane set), but if you’re spending >$600 on a tool, you might want a chisel. But don’t get all worked up over this because that doesn’t really matter!
In our humble opinion, the easiest woodworking tool ever made is the bench planes. For example, the first plane on this list was the plane from Martin with a bench plane head, in the “tortoise” and “triangle” heads. Those are the basic bench planes.
For the rest of this list, I’ve only listed some basic but good bench planes. If you’re the type of person who likes to do everything yourself, you can keep on adding to your tools list without having to worry
